Where are we sending Austin Abrams next? The ISS as it’s breaking down and about to crash into Earth?! I love watching Abrams go through some shit. What an audio and visual delight and a masterclass of practical effects. I enjoyed it so much more than I was expecting. Josh Brolin brings his all in everything he does. I’m looking forward to Brolin and Abrams winning an Oscar someday.

I legitimately do not understand how Marvel fumbled the bag on Blade. Mahershala Ali and Bassam Tariq both just proved on a platter that they can carry a brutal, sharp, R-rated badass movie. P.S. The one negative had nothing to do with the movie itself and everything to do with being seated one space away from two of the most obnoxious, clearly under-the-influence people who exclaimed and talked at every single moment. Halfway through, guest services came in and sat next to them for five straight minutes before telling them to quiet down. Their immediate response was "We're not talking," to which the employee just said, "We've been here for five minutes. You have been talking very loudly." Then he left, never came back, and they kept talking the rest of the runtime. Tough not to let that affect the overall experience, but the movie itself was a great ride.

Let’s see which way the wind blows. I went in completely blind and think it made the experience so much better. What a statement on how to make a statement. This movie has A LOT to say, and while it definitely won’t be for everyone, it’s a great dark satire that feels all too real. I loved the style and direction, and the practical effects just feel real in a way you don’t see too often anymore. I loved that the marketing didn’t give anything away, and the way this film plays with its storytelling layers to balance biting satire with grounded, terrifying reality is brilliant. Tom Cruise is swinging for the fences and gunning for an Oscar, and he goes bold enough that he might actually get it. Jesse Plemons is fantastic as always, and honestly, the entire cast fires on all cylinders. Another phenomenal entry in Iñárritu’s filmography. We need more original, wild swings like this.

Pattinson is locked in as Chris Hansen, Skyler Gisondo is great as the decoy Dan, and Merritt Wever makes the producer feel like someone who will go to any lengths to get the shot. The mid-2000s fever dream look is a nostalgia trip that feels like channel surfing at 2 a.m., and it looks gorgeous. Hansen and his team honestly believe they're doing a public service, and that belief is what lets them exploit everyone in reach, the decoys, the targets, even the viewers at home.

This review may contain spoilers. I did have fun with this one, especially the dynamic between Ron and Hermione. Without these two leads, it could have been lackluster but they bring both the humor and the anger to ground the characters. Some things get a bit repetitive though, the constant time jumping and about to shoot someone with a one-liner thing.

Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil was fantastic. This might be the most grounded a video game movie has ever felt while somehow still feeling like an extension of actually playing the games. I really wasn’t expecting this to be one of my favorites of the year. It’s not just references either. Finding items and keys, checking maps, managing what you have, discovering new weapons and locations, meeting characters that basically feel like NPCs, solving problems, and constantly having some monster or boss looming over your journey. Even the camera perspectives, visibility, sound design, and the way the story moves from objective to objective capture that survival horror feeling. There are moments where you know exactly what our main character is doing wrong because you’ve made the same stupid mistake playing a Resident Evil game and just want to yell at him. And that TITLE CARD. So good. I was also not expecting this to be nearly as funny as it was. Austin Abrams is hilarious and completely sells being a normal guy desperately trying to survive increasingly insane situations. I want to see him in everything. The movie keeps introducing new locations, monsters, weapons, and problems without ever feeling overloaded, and somehow doesn’t waste a minute of its short runtime. The gore was spot on for what it needed to be. There are so many memorable and genuinely original sequences in this.

Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma (2026)

★★★★½ · ♥ Liked

Absolutely loved this. Such a campy, weird love letter to slashers and the horror industry across generations. The opening exposition montage setting up the entire Camp Miasma franchise and its place in this world immediately had me. Such a fun way to make decades of fake horror history feel completely real. The whole thing just looks and sounds incredible. The practical effects, miniatures, matte paintings, camera work, sound design, ridiculous punch-in zooms, and over-the-top gore all feel pulled from different eras of horror without ever feeling like cheap imitation. There were multiple sequences where I just wanted to shake my head and go, “so good.” The transition into the movie-within-the-movie world especially was cool. Hannah Einbinder and Gillian Anderson are both fantastic. Their chemistry holds the whole thing together. Jane Schoenbrun clearly has so much love for this genre and its history, and you can feel it in basically every frame almost like they were the little kid watching the old slasher series in the short transition scene. I can’t wait to see what they do next. Also, the chicken finger scene and the Zoom scene absolutely killed me. We needed more Thor 😂 Just incredible vibes. Campy, horny, bloody, hilarious, and completely committed to the bit. More people need to see it!

Caught this at Celebration for Mystery Movie Monday and had a blast. It basically felt like a darker, more grounded, modern take on Pineapple Express. I haven't laughed this hard in a theater in a long time. There's one explosive scene in particular where I was genuinely dying. For how dumb and chaotic the comedy gets, the acting actually holds the whole thing together. Every weird side character they run into makes sense in the world and has clear motivations, which keeps it grounded. Dave Franco was awesome, O'Shea Jackson Jr. brought a great performance, and Mason Thames was incredible. He plays the ultimate creepy little shithead, completely unlikable on paper, but he’s so charming and fun to watch on screen. Really excited to see what he does next. I could easily see this turning into an underrated cult classic down the line. Only downside wasn't the movie itself, but the crowd etiquette. One guy a few rows over felt the need to give verbal commentary through the entire runtime. You could feel the whole theater getting annoyed with all the head-turning, though nobody actually called him out. Sucked to have the vibe dampened during an early screening, but the movie was still a favorite of the year. Another solid Mystery Movie Monday win. Definitely recommending this one once it officially drops.

Liked that it pushed the gore boundaries for its rating without going overboard, felt pretty grounded for what it was. Didn't get a ton of explanation for stuff going on but honestly didn't need it, worked fine without it. Also we don't deserve Anne Hathaway. She's fantastic in literally everything she does. Second Mystery Movie Monday at Celebration, and it might be the most fun this series has been. A fantastic horror-comedy that kept swapping between different worlds and genres, weird and absurd one minute, unsettling the next. Cristin Milioti carries a lot of the weight and makes it look effortless. Topher Grace and their entire voice cast just had a ton of fun with their parts. Keegan-Michael Key is having an absolute blast with his part, and it shows. Even the kids in this hold their own. What sticks most is how original it feels, very refreshing. Funny, weird, bonkers, and completely its own thing. Might be one of the best horror movies of the year. Obsession is still probably the one to beat, but for pure fun in a horror movie, nothing’s come close to this in a long time.
